5th Degree Black
"I enjoy Ken’s presence, I appreciate his work and contribution to the planet and I admire his sincerity and heart. He is the real deal." - Dr. Allison Rees, Life Seminars
Ken has studied and taught martial arts for more than 30 years. He holds Black Belt degrees in Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate and Ryu Kyu Kobudo, and a Brown Belt in Yoshinkan Aikido. He is a former 2x world karate forms champion and a member of the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate-Do Kyokai & Okinawa Kobudo Kokusai Rengokai of Naha, Japan. He is also a certified Life Coach, Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Instructor, 4-Seasons Qigong instructor, and Mindful Meditation teacher. He is currently completing his Diploma in Professional Counselling through Vancouver College of Counselling.
As the founder of Karate 5.0, Ken believes that martial arts instruction must be applied professionally and to various age and interest levels. With this ideal, he created programs such as the Little Warriors® Life Skills program, EMPOWERED™ for Woman and POW-R-GIRLS™ self-defense courses, and the 30 Minute Warrior® fitness program.
Ken draws his ability to design and instruct successful programs from his experience in various senior management positions outside of martial arts. He also believes in contributing to his community and has served as a volunteer director on several non-profit boards including:
- Past-President, 100 Men Who Care Foundation
- Past-Martial Arts Commissioner, TAFISA (an International Olympic Committee Recognized Multi-Sport Organization)
- Past-Chair, OC, Tafisa World Martial Arts Games
- Past-Chairman, World Martial Arts Games Committee
- Past-President, Canadian National Martial Arts Association
- Past-Vice President, Sport for All Canada
- Past-President, Comox Valley Crime Stoppers
- Past Vice-Chair, Victoria Heritage Foundation
- Steering Committee, 2003 Island Martial Arts Challenge.
In addition to his world championship titles, in 2014 Ken was recognized as a Champion of Nike’s Designed to Move global health movement, and in 1991 he was the recipient of a Community Service Award from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Ken has been guest speaker at international sports events, made several appearances on radio, international news and television, and has been the feature in a number of newspapers and magazines. When not immersed in other activities, he enjoys writing. His written articles have appeared in newspapers and magazines internally, and he recently co-authored the Best-Selling book "The Secret to Winning Big" with Brian Tracy and others.
"One of the greatest joys I get from life is from helping others, to help themselves."
